Endometriosis can present in different ways

Endometriosis is a chronic condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus. Symptoms vary widely; pain severity does not always match the visible extent of disease.

Some people have disabling symptoms, while others are diagnosed during fertility evaluation or surgery for another reason.

Patterns patients often describe

Severe menstrual pain is common, but symptoms may also include chronic pelvic pain, pain during sex, pain with bowel movements or urination, heavy bleeding, bloating, nausea, fatigue and infertility. The timing of symptoms around the menstrual cycle can be informative.

• Pain that repeatedly disrupts school, work or sleep

• Pain during sex or pelvic examination

• Cyclical bowel or bladder pain

• Persistent pelvic pain between periods

• Difficulty conceiving alongside other suggestive symptoms

Other conditions can look similar

Adenomyosis, fibroids, ovarian cysts, pelvic-floor problems, bowel disorders, urinary conditions and musculoskeletal pain may overlap with endometriosis symptoms. A careful history, examination and selected imaging help build a differential diagnosis.

When to arrange an evaluation

Consult when symptoms are persistent, worsening, affecting daily life, not responding to initial treatment or connected with fertility concerns. Sudden severe pain, faintness, fever, pregnancy-related pain or acute illness needs urgent assessment.
