Hysterectomy does not automatically mean removing everything
A hysterectomy removes the uterus. A total hysterectomy includes the cervix; a supracervical or subtotal hysterectomy leaves it in place. Removal of the fallopian tubes is called salpingectomy, while removal of an ovary is oophorectomy. These terms should be discussed clearly before consent.
Ovary decisions affect hormones
The ovaries produce hormones before natural menopause. Removing both ovaries can cause surgical menopause if menopause has not already occurred. Keeping healthy ovaries may preserve hormonal function, while removal may be advised in selected cases because of disease or cancer risk.
The cervix decision is separate
Whether the cervix is retained depends on diagnosis, surgical route, cervical history and clinical discussion. Retaining it may mean continued cervical screening where appropriate. Neither choice should be presented as automatically superior for every patient.
Write the planned procedure down
Before surgery, ask the surgeon to name exactly what is planned, what would only be removed if an unexpected finding occurs, how consent covers that possibility and how each choice may affect screening, hormones and recovery.
